| Our daughter has rheumatoid arthritis, she has had it since she was six years old. She suffered for quite a few years because the Doctors kept telling us it was just growing pains! Finally we had her see someone else in the practice who knew what she had just by looking at her joints, she knew because her mother suffers from it. So if your child wakes up in the middle of the night crying saying her legs or arms or any body part aches constantly, have them checked for JRA. It is heartbreaking to have to see your child suffer, but there is medicine out there that makes a big difference in their lives. Our daughter couldn't even walk up the stairs normally, she would have to walk sideways one step at a time. She couldn't run, her body was abnormally skinny and awkward, and she had cysts on her wrists. One of the PA's at the Doctors told me to hit her wrist with a book to make the cysts go away! (shocking!) She thought they were just cysts, she didn't know they were a symptom of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. As a mother you know when something isn't right ,so follow your heart and insist on an answer. As a parent it was so hard to make the decision to put our child on the medicine, enbrel, because the first side effect was sudden death! YIKES! It's such a huge responsibility to make that decision when its not you who will be receiving the medicine. Theres always that doubt in your mind that what if its the wrong decision. The Doctor told us that just ten years ago kids with JRA ended up in wheel chairs. The new medicines halt the deterioration of the bones, and if we don't give it to her she will be crippled. Well, what do you do then? We had her go on the "enbrel", it is an injection once a week. It is very costly, and thank God we have insurance to cover it. But, we worry about what happens after years of being on this medicine? What happens when she is no longer on our insurance? Do we have to make her stay in college till she's almost 30 so she is covered? Scary!!!! Our daughter Samantha is a trooper, she is a one of a kind kid, she never says she can't do something, she tries everything. She actually plays softball, tried basketball, but that is too much on your joints on the wood floors. She doesn't run the fastest but she runs as fast as she can. She plays with her whole heart and soul and has fun, because she knows what a blessing it is to even be able to run! Her favorite thing to do is "sing" and play softball, she is amazing. She never asks for help, she never complains, Love this kid! She still needs some massaging of her legs, arms, knees, back etc.. She still has pain, and there are days where she just needs to stay home and rest. Shes my inspiration to keep moving even when I am tired or hurting. I try never to complain about anything because she almost never complains about her pain and she has it throughout her whole body, from her neck to her toes! If she doesn't complain who am i to complain? We write about this because if we can save even one kid from suffering longer than they have to, then we've done some good! |
